Sofia Batalha

Sofia cultivates an ethical practice grounded in sensitive listening, ecological co-regulation, and radical implication with life.
She does not offer quick solutions or universal recipes. Instead, she invites us into the territory of paradox, grief, wild beauty, and loving responsibility toward the world.

"I speak from the wound and beauty of our ecosystemic condition, traversed by memory, rhythm, and the irreparable nature of loss. My commitment is to the poetics of the possible; I am an eco-mythical activist out of a need to belong. I am a weaver of questions because I know that the right questions can open portals."

ECO-MYTHOLOGIST · WRITER · FACILITATOR

About Sofia

I am an independent researcher, eco-mythologist, writer, and facilitator of radical imagination, deep listening, and meta-relational education. For over two decades, my interdisciplinary practice has woven together ecopsychology, applied mythology, decolonial pedagogies, and symbolic ecology, exploring how the stories we inherit shape our relationships with the living world.

My work moves between research, writing, education, and ecological participation, seeking to cultivate more situated, reciprocal, and accountable ways of inhabiting a wounded Earth.

I am the founder of Serpente da Lua – Eco-Mythology, author of several books, including The Sanctuary: Essays on Eco-Mythology, Siduri, and Tales of the Serpent and the Moon, and creator of educational programs such as Introduction to Ecopsychology at the Portuguese Transpersonal School and (Un)training in Eco-Mythology.

My practice has grown through collaborations with international research and learning communities, including The Emergence Network, Schumacher College, and Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures. I currently collaborate externally with the Socio-Ecological Transition Research Group at the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c), while continuing to explore eco-mythical storytelling, grief literacy, ecological kinship, and relational repair.

“I do not offer universal answers or promises of transformation. My work is an invitation to stay with complexity, question inherited certainties, and remember our responsibility to the living worlds to which we already belong.”

Background & Practice

Interdisciplinary Education & Research

With an academic background in Graphic Design, Communication, and Heritage Studies, my ongoing education includes Applied Mythology, Ecopsychology, Indigenous and Liberation Psychologies at Pacifica University, alongside Deep Education, Transpersonal Psychology, Ecofeminism, and meta-relational approaches. My learning has been shaped by international programmes and collaborative research communities, including Schumacher College and Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures.

Eco-Mythological Education & Facilitation

With over 20 years of applied interdisciplinary practice, I develop courses, workshops, and participatory spaces rooted in ecological inquiry, embodied learning, and radical imagination. I created the Introduction to Ecopsychology course for Escola Transpessoal and founded Serpente da Lua, where I facilitate explorations of eco-mythology, relational responsibility, collective grief, and cultural transformation.

Writing, Storytelling & Collective Projects

My publications include The Sanctuary, Siduri, and Contos da Serpente e da Lua, among other works on mythology, imagination, and ecological belonging. I organised Portugal’s first Eco-Mythology Gathering in 2023, co-created journals and podcasts, and served on the Advisory Board of The Emergence Network. Through literary and perceptual activism, I explore how storytelling can challenge inherited structures of separation and nurture ecological responsibility.

Eco-Mythic-Activism, eco-mythology, ecopsychology, art and books. No fear of paradox, anti-fascist. Curious on the spectrum of cynicism.
